Group Bookmarks RSS Feeds to Webslides

Published by under Just Playing

Took the educators at Diigo group RSS feed to show how you can add a WebSlide RSS feed to a blog. Ipicture-2.png am not sure if I missed something but when I clicked on the WebSlide icon shown in the Groups bookmarks section it creates the webslide but I could not find the embed code. So the steps I used involve:

  • get the feed that you want (http://groups.diigo.com/rss/educators/bookmark)
  • go to http://slides.diigo.com/ to decide what type of web slide you want to use
  • Add the RSS feed to the the WebSlide

  • Decide on how you want to display your WebSlide
  • Copy the embed code into your blog post or page
WebSlides do not fit in that well with my blog layout. So I created a different page template and using this template was able to fit the Diigo WebSlide into the blogsite a bit better. It would be nice if the ability to embed the slide was available as soon as you clicked on the WebSlide Icon in the groups section.

Friendfeed

Published by under Tools

As with many things this is another tool that I just started playing with to see what it was about. And, like many times, I did not fully get it until I better understood the social aspect of the service. I can follow a person’s travels trough the net by following them in twitter, subscribing to their blogs in a reader or becoming a friend in last.fm but boy does this make it all easier. You can comment to people and respond to tweets …. another addition to my learning network. l wonder if I had more than one friend if the information overload would be a bit much :-) as what I found from one person today took up a lot of my time!! Anyhow I added a Friendfeed feed to my to my sidebar and so far it has been OK with the wordpress sidebar widget.

Diigo

Published by under Tools

Starting to like Diigo more and more. On the new toolbar when saving a bookmark I can bookmark to a list. So if I want to add to a Webslide I can go directly from a bookmarked page I find and add it to a list. This then is reflected in the change to the Webslide itself. For example, if I have a webslide dealing with Facebook and Privacy related issues and I want to add to this Webslide I

  • go to GReader and looked at my Newsearch for Facebook and Privacy
  • locate an article I want to add to the Facebook slideshow
  • clicked on bookmark on the Diigo toolbar
  • selected the list I wanted this bookmark to be a part of
  • the article then becomes part of the Webslides slideshow

Looking at Gsites

Published by under ACS PD, Tools

Have been trying to port my Tech Tools Blog to google sites to better understand what I can do with Gsites. So far the move from my Wordpress Blog to Gsites has been ok.

  • moving information from Wordpress to Gsites is a straightforward copy and paste
  • miss the flexibility of creating a Menu system in Wordpress..but Gsites is more of a wiki
  • both handle Youtube videos well
  • easy to embed a Google Calendar into a Gsite (have not tried that with Wordpress)
  • a Google Document can easily be embedded in both Gsites and Wordpress
  • cannot embed anything else into my Gsite (Vidller or Jing screencasts)
  • site changes can be subscribed to through email updates but only for owners and collaborators
  • no RSS feeds in Gsites cannot imagine managing a class of Gsites without RSS feeds

I read a Lifehacker post about creating an RSS feed from Gmail labels. This would be a work around for the lack of RSS feeds.
