Animoto

Published by Gary under CatchAll

This is an extremely cool service. First you upload photos, then you upload or select the music (Animoto provides some music) and finally you click finalize. One - two - three Animoto mixes the photos to the tempo of the music and creates a flash video. Videos up to 30 seconds in length are free and $30 gives you the opportunity to create longer videos.

The example below is a sample of a video I made (actually made it Animoto made it) for my daughter.

Embedding the video seems to break my Wordpress layout. Will try to fix that this is a link to the video.

Skim

Published by Gary under Things Mac

As we move more and more towards using PDF files Skim might come in handy. Skim allows you to mark up PDF files:

  • Adding and editing notes
  • Highlighting important text
  • Making “snapshots” for easy reference
  • Navigation using table of contents or thumbnails
  • View all your notes and highlights
  • Convenient reading in full screen
  • Giving powerful presentations
  • Handy preview of internal links
  • Focus using a reading bar
  • Magnification tool

You can do some of this with Zotero as well.

ARD and Printer Setup

Published by Gary under Things Mac

Make sure you have your printer setup the way you want it to be for all client machines.

In ARD select the copy Icon

The files you need to copy are found in the following locations

/private/etc/cups/printers.conf —need this file

/private/etc/cups/ppd/— need this folder

These files are hidden so use the Go To a Folder menu option (Go—>Go To a Folder)
While in Finder type in the path (/private/etc/cups/) and shift click to select the printers.conf file then add them to the “items to copy” area.

Select “Same relative location” as the copy destination.
Select replace existing items.
Click Copy.

Fond this on the ARD manual but left it here so I would not forget.

Leading For Change

Published by Gary under ACS PD, CatchAll

• What is the problem we are trying to solve, or the obstacle we are trying to overcome, and what does it have to do with improving teaching and learning?
• What are our strategies for solving this problem, and how and why do we think implementation of these strategies will cause the change that’s needed—what’s our “theory of action”?
• Who (teachers, parents, students, community) needs to understand what, in order to “own the problem” and support the strategies we’re implementing?
• Who is accountable for what for implementation of this strategy to be successful, and what do they need to be effective?
• What evidence (observable changes in short-term outcomes or behaviors) will we track that will tell us whether our strategies are working? (Leading For Change :)

Enjoyed this one.

How many problems at our school are caused by a lack of common understanding of terminology? Individuals using terms then assuming that the word triggers the same mental image with colleagues? More often it does not and I think we end up spinning our wheels, get nowhere and are left feeling that you are not part of a process.

We are getting better at it at least this year when we started of with assessment we defined formative and summative assessment. We will hopefully be able to broaden our collaborative understanding with examples and further discussion. However, if you look at just some of the items mentioned in the post you can see a number of items where a common understanding of what the term means would not be reached.
