Pandora R.I.P?

Published by Gary under Things Mac

Update:VPN’s are a good thing!

Wanted to hear some different music so I fired up Pandora. This is what I got

Dear Pandora Visitor,

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for most listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

We believe that you are in United Arab Emirates (your IP address appears to be 195.229.236.213). If you believe we have made a mistake, we apologize and ask that you please contact us at pandora-support@pandora.com

If you are a paid subscriber, please contact us at pandora-support@pandora.com and we will issue a pro-rated refund to the credit card you used to sign up. If you have been using Pandora, we will keep a record of your existing stations and bookmarked artists and songs, so that when we are able to launch in your country, they will be waiting for you.

We will be notifying listeners as licensing agreements are established in individual countries. If you would like to be notified by email when Pandora is available in your country, please enter your email address below. The pace of global licensing is hard to predict, but we have the ultimate goal of being able to offer our service everywhere.

We share your disappointment and greatly appreciate your understanding.

You get used to being blocked out of different services here in the UAE. Skype, Flickr etc. etc. Did not expect to get blocked out from entering an US site! I wonder if this will work in Canada? I guess I’ll have to find some US based VPN.

Although converting video is a bit trickier–sometimes the online services fail–you can accomplish it with a shareware program known as EasyWMV ($15). Unlike the other programs mentioned in this article, it costs money. As shared on their web site, EasyWMV can be used to convert or resize wmv, asf, avi, mp4, mpg, mpeg, mov, m4v, flv, nsv, swf and vob video files so that they can be used with QuickTime Player, Apple TV or an iPod. You can get it online at http://www.easywma.com/wmv/

All sorts of great stuff related to the Mac on this page. I had not heard of EasyWMV but will have to try it. I started converting using ffmpeg and then paid a few dollars and am now using Visual Hub for our conversion.
